Possible Renegotiation of NAFTA

On May 18, the Trump Administration officially informed Congress that it intends to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The President had earlier stated that he would withdraw the U.S. from the agreement, but has decided that updating its terms would be more favorable to the U.S. It is unclear what impact the renegotiation could have on the TN nonimmigrant classification, which allows U.S., Canadian and Mexican citizens to live and work in each-others’ countries under a special program created by the original 1994 Agreement.
