Beware of Police Complaint Scam

July 12, 2018: A Professor on NC State’s campus has reported that scammers pretending to be with the police called him, and appear to be targeting NC State University faculty and students by asking for immigration documentation and information, and possibly claiming that there are outstanding warrants and fines owed. The scammers might be sophisticated enough to use a fake caller ID number that appears to show an actual police number. The NC State University Police confirmed that such scams are an ongoing concern (including in the surrounding communities as well), and that the Police Department does not notify people about arrest warrants or fines owed by telephone.

If you receive such a call, hang up and do not provide any personal, immigration or financial information to the caller. Do not call any other numbers that the person who called you might give to you. The FBI has a website listing many of the common (and new) fraud scams at https://www.fbi.gov/scams-and-safety/common-fraud-schemes.

If you believe you have already been a victim of identity theft or fraud, please contact University Police to make a report at 515-3000.
